The Fukuda Family Residence Bathroom and Toilet (福田家住宅風呂及び便所, Fukuda-ke Jūtaku Furo oyobi Benjo) in Higashisako, Noichi-cho, Konan City, Kochi Prefecture, is a single-storey timber service building of around 1924 with an attached partition wall, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on August 21, 2002. It covers 22 square meters.

The Fukuda Family Residence Bathroom and Toilet runs north to south east of the reception wing and storehouse, and its north end connects to the southwest corner of the main house. It is the service wing attached to the main house.

A Hipped Service Wing

The Fukuda Family Residence Bathroom and Toilet measures 4 ken by 1.5 ken, a long, narrow block under a hipped pantile roof (Yosemune-zukuri, Sangawara-buki).

The northern part of the west side is an outdoor toilet, used from outside and built into one end of the narrow block.

A Wall That Frames the Approach

The Fukuda Family Residence Bathroom and Toilet was registered as contributing to the historic landscape, under register number 39-0060.

The key is less the building than its partition wall. The wall runs from the southwest end of the bath building toward the reception wing, turning a right angle on the way. The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits it with shaping the view from the gate to the main entrance.

Step through the gate and the wall screens the service quarters while steering your eye toward the front door. That quiet job is why a modest outbuilding earned a place on the register.

Seeing the Bath Building

The Fukuda Family Residence Bathroom and Toilet sits inside the compound, behind the reception wing and storehouse on the west edge, so it is hard to see from outside. Its partition wall faces the path just inside the gate.
