A Two-Room Retreat West of the Main House
The Goto Family Residence Detached Wing (五藤家住宅離れ, Gotō-ke Jūtaku Hanare) is a single-storey timber reception room built in 1896 just west of the main house in the Gotō family compound on the Aki Castle site in Doi, Aki City, Kochi Prefecture, and entered on the national register of Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2008.
It covers 25 square metres under a hipped pantile roof with an east-west ridge, and half-bay lean-to eaves on the north and south. It dates from the same year as the main house, the storage shed and the board fence, 1896.
Rooms and Roof
Inside the Goto Family Residence Detached Wing are just two rooms: a six-mat room with an alcove (Tokonoma) and display shelves, and a four-and-a-half-mat anteroom, with a veranda along the south side. There is no kitchen and no water; the building exists purely as a place to sit.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs draws attention to the roof. The west and south slopes are laid with right-hand pantiles, the east and north with left-hand ones, so a small four-sided roof is split into two pairs of faces tiled in opposite directions. It is a clean example of a Tosa roofing practice that responds to the region's typhoon winds, and the building was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape of the nation.
What to Look For
Walk the Goto Family Residence Detached Wing's four sides in turn. From the southwest corner you see the two right-hand faces; from the northeast, the two left-hand ones. The switch happens at the hip ridges, and with only four faces to track, the pattern is easier to follow here than on the main house.
Look too at the south veranda under its half-bay eaves, with the six-mat room opening behind it. Set a short way from the main house and turned toward the garden, the building follows the classic arrangement of a detached reception room.
Visiting the Detached Wing
The detached wing stands on the west side of the main house within the Goto Family Aki Residence. Entry to the residence is free and the exterior can be seen from inside the grounds. We could not confirm from city information whether the rooms are open to visitors; ask the Aki City Museum of History and Folklore, which manages the residence, if you would like to see the interior.
