A Small Gate Between Path and Garden
The Hatanaka Family Residence Garden Gate and Tsukiji Wall (畠中家住宅庭門及び築地塀, Hatanaka-ke Jūtaku Niwamon oyobi Tsuijibei) is a gate and wall of 1886 separating the garden from the path that leads from the main gate to the entrance of the main house on the Hatanaka family estate in Doi, Aki City, Kochi Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 28 April 2010. The garden gate is 2.0 metres wide, and the wall bends round for 10 metres in total.
Of the estate's three gates, the main gate, the middle gate and this garden gate, it is the smallest, standing beside the approach to the front door and giving access to the garden.
Why It Was Registered
The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits the Hatanaka Family Residence Garden Gate and Tsukiji Wall with creating an attractive garden setting. Screening the garden from the approach with a low wall and a small gate, rather than laying it open, reads as a way of giving the garden depth.
It dates from 1886, like the main gate, the middle gate and the guardhouse, which suggests the whole route from the street to the front door was laid out at the same time. The criterion is a contribution to the historic landscape.
Bracket Gate, Sliding Door and Wall
The garden gate is an Udekimon, a simple type in which brackets projecting from the posts carry the roof. Its gabled Kirizuma-zukuri roof mixes left- and right-lapping pantiles. The support posts are placed on the garden side and the opening is closed by a sliding door, presumably to keep the face toward the approach clean.
The wall stands on a Kikkōzumi hexagonal stone base with a timber sill, boarded in Shitami-itabari below and plastered above. Unlike a classic Tsuijibei of rammed earth, it is a light construction of timber and boards. It turns a corner to wrap the garden, and its white upper wall and boarded dado form a backdrop to the planting.
Visiting
The Hatanaka Family Residence Garden Gate and Tsukiji Wall lies inside the main gate on a private estate that is not open. It is probably not visible from the road, and the garden cannot be seen from outside.
Please do not peer in through the main gate. The photographs in the national database show the gate and the turn of the wall.
