Two Storehouses Under One Roof
The Hatanaka Family Residence Rice Storehouse and Clothing Storehouse (畠中家住宅米蔵及び衣装蔵, Hatanaka-ke Jūtaku Komegura oyobi Ishōgura) is a mid-Meiji Dozo-zukuri storehouse on the west side of the Hatanaka family's main house in Doi, Aki City, Kochi Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 28 April 2010. One long building is divided into three rooms and serves as both a rice store and a clothing store.
Mostly single-storey with a partial upper floor, it covers 60 square metres and runs north to south, 11 metres long and only 3.8 metres deep, the largest storehouse on the estate.
What the Registration Records
According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the interior of the Hatanaka Family Residence Rice Storehouse and Clothing Storehouse is split into three rooms, the southernmost of which is the clothing store. Rice and clothing were kept side by side in one building.
The walls are finished in Tosa-shikkui, and the roof uses left-lapping pantiles. Pantiles come in left- and right-lapping versions, and the record cites the left-lapping tiles and Tosa plaster as regional traits. The criterion is a contribution to the historic landscape.
Eaves, Windows and Iron Doors
The gabled roof of Sangawara-buki pantiles projects on the east side, toward the main house, as a deep Hisashi so that goods could be moved in and out under cover. At the south end of this eave there is a small toilet.
Windows are set high in the walls and the doorway is hung with iron doors, a precaution against fire. From the south end of the eave the firewood shed continues southward, so the working side of the estate is lined by a single run of buildings starting here.
Visiting
The Hatanaka Family Residence Rice Storehouse and Clothing Storehouse stands inside the private grounds, on the west side of the working yard, and is not open. The three rooms and the iron doors cannot be seen up close.
From the road it is screened by the partition wall and the main house, so at most you may glimpse part of its roof.
