A 1928 Concrete Bridge in the Niyodo Hills
The Takaiwa Bridge (高岩橋, Takaiwa-bashi) is a reinforced-concrete girder bridge built in 1928 across the Kamiyakawa River, part of the Niyodo River system, at Takaiwa, Ino Town, Agawa District, Kochi Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on March 2, 2004 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a reinforced-concrete girder bridge 64 metres long and 4.1 metres wide, registration number 39-0136, owned by Ino Town. Ino Town's own list gives the same 64.0-metre length, 4.1-metre width and 1928 date.
Why It Was Registered
The Takaiwa Bridge was registered as a structure contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a plain road structure with a unified design across the whole bridge, and as evidence of the modernisation of the mountain districts.
According to Ino Town, the town has three nationally registered properties, the Takaiwa Bridge, the main hall of Kuwase Shrine and the main house of the Yamanaka residence, all registered on March 2, 2004.
