A Concrete Gate Matching the Hall

The Former Amakusa Education Hall Main Gate and Wall (旧天草教育会館正門及び塀) is the reinforced concrete main gate and wall of 1934 at the Former Amakusa Education Hall in Funanoo-machi, Amakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture, which in 2006 were registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a gate 4.4 metres wide with flanking walls and a wall 40 metres long, owned by Amakusa City and registered for their contribution to the historic landscape.

The Agency notes that the gate and wall share their design with the bases of the main building's porch columns, giving a unified appearance.

Structure

According to the Agency, the gate consists of two rendered reinforced concrete posts 1.9 metres high, 4.4 metres apart, with walls to either side.

The wall runs for a total of 40 metres along the site boundary.

What to Look For

The shared design of the gateposts and the porch column bases shows that the approach from gate to hall was planned as one.
