One Half of a Pair
The Former JNR Miyanoharu Line Doyama Bridge (旧国鉄宮原線堂山橋梁, Dōyama Kyōryō) is a three-arch concrete railway bridge in the Kitazato district of Oguni Town, Kumamoto Prefecture, completed around 1938 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2004.
It crosses the Kitazato River, part of the Chikugo system, and is 36 metres long. It stands on the Oita side of the old Kitazato Station, with Shioigawa Bridge just to the north.
Like the other bridges on the line, it has filled spandrels: the wall between arch and deck is solid concrete.
Why Doyama Matters
The registration criterion is contribution to the historic landscape. According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the Former JNR Miyanoharu Line Doyama Bridge matches Shioigawa Bridge almost exactly in form and scale, differing only in the length of its piers, and together with the green hill between them the two bridges make a single composed view.
On its own it is a modest three-arch bridge. The point is the pairing: the same design repeated on either side of a hill, with only the legs adjusted to the depth of each valley. That pairing lets you read, in the land itself, how the track climbed over the rise and crossed two valleys in quick succession.
That the Agency's assessment is aimed at the view rather than the structure alone says a lot about this bridge.
What to Look For
Compare the piers. Because Doyama and Shioigawa share the same arches, any difference shows up in the height of the legs, which is really a measure of how deeply the Kitazato River has cut its valley.
The two piers flare toward the base. Seen side-on, the curve of the arches runs straight into that flare, so the whole wall seems to plant its feet.
From early summer into autumn the hillside is at its greenest and the grey concrete stands out sharply against it.
Visiting
It lies outside the walking path the town maintains between Yu Station and the old Kitazato Station. The Japan Travel Bureau Foundation's survey notes that Konogawa and Kitazato are the two bridges easily reached on foot, so plan to come by car.
The town lists no parking or toilets for this bridge. The land around it is farmland and private property: stay on the road and do not walk into fields or onto the trackbed. There is no admission charge or booking. Shioigawa Bridge is just over the hill, and seeing the two together makes the relationship clear.
