The Last Bridge Before Kitazato
The Former JNR Miyanoharu Line Kitazato Bridge (旧国鉄宮原線北里橋梁, Kitazato Kyōryō) is a five-arch concrete railway bridge in the Kitazato district of Oguni Town, Kumamoto Prefecture, completed around 1938 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2004.
It was built almost against the western end of the old Kitazato Station. The five arches each span 10 metres and the whole bridge runs 60 metres, curving gently as it approaches the platform.
Two of the arches were designed to let a road pass underneath. Since the line closed the deck has served as a footbridge, and anyone walking the old railway from Higo-Oguni crosses it just before reaching the station site at the end of the path.
Why Kitazato Matters
The registration criterion is contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs counts the Former JNR Miyanoharu Line Kitazato Bridge among a group of unreinforced concrete arches built in response to the wartime drive to save steel.
Without reinforcing bars, the only way to carry a train on concrete is to let the arch do the work. Keeping every span at a modest 10 metres and filling the walls above the arches solid was the straightforward answer.
It is not one of the larger bridges on the line. What makes it worth the walk is the combination: a curved plan, two road arches and a station at the far end. Step off the deck onto the old platform and you are following the exact line a train took as it leaned into the curve and slowed for Kitazato.
What to Look For
Start on the road below and look up at the arches that span it. The road openings are the same 10 metres as the rest, so the whole side reads as one continuous wall.
On the deck, notice that you cannot see the far end. The curve turns you slowly as you walk along the parapet.
The old Kitazato platform, with its station nameboard, waits on the other side. Standing there makes it obvious how tightly bridge and station were fitted together.
Visiting
The bridge is open to pedestrians and you can walk across it at any time of day. There is no admission desk and no booking.
Mokkonkan, the exchange centre in Kitazato, has parking and toilets and is about three minutes on foot from the station site; the bridge is immediately west of the platform. Walkers coming from Michi-no-Eki Oguni Yu Station reach it at the end of the path, about 4 kilometres long.
Cars use the road beneath the arches, so keep to the verge when you stop to look up. The town asks visitors to leave the trackbed once the light begins to fade.
