A Meiji Railway Home
The Former JNR Yatake Station Stationmaster's Residence Main House (旧国鉄矢岳駅駅長官舎主屋) is a single-storey timber railway staff house built in 1909 in Yatake-cho, Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2003.
It stands about 110 metres west of Yatake Station on the JR Hisatsu Line. The tiled roof is a simple Kirizuma-zukuri gable, with the entrance on the long, eaves side in the Hirairi manner. The walls are clad in overlapping horizontal boards held by notched vertical battens, a finish called sasarako Shitami-itabari.
The plan measures 4 and a half by 3 and a half bays, with a kitchen wing 2 bays long projecting from the east side. The building area is 84 square metres: modest, orderly, and about right for a stationmaster's family.
Why the Main House Matters
It was registered as a model of design. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the Former JNR Yatake Station Stationmaster's Residence Main House as one of the few Meiji-period railway staff houses still standing anywhere in Japan.
Staff housing disappears far more easily than stations or bridges. It was built because the railway needed it and demolished once the railway no longer did. This house went up in 1909, the year the Hitoyoshi to Yoshimatsu section opened, and it keeps its plain form: gabled roof, side entrance, board-and-batten walls. That survival is the heart of its value.
The projecting kitchen shows how the house actually worked as a home. East of the house is the stone well, registered at the same time, so you can read even the relationship between kitchen and water supply.
What to Look For
Start with the walls. The notched battens, cut to match each step of the overlapping boards, divide the surface at regular intervals, and the shadow lines give it a fine texture typical of Meiji timber building.
Then look for the kitchen wing on the east side, a lower roof attached to the main gable. That is the 2-bay kitchen the Agency's record describes.
Visiting
The Former JNR Yatake Station Stationmaster's Residence Main House is not a visitor attraction and its interior is not open to the public. From August 2019 it was run as Hoshitake, a guesthouse let to one party at a time, but the Hisatsu Line between Yatsushiro and Yoshimatsu has been closed since the heavy rain of July 2020, and its current status could not be confirmed from official sources.
If you go to look at the exterior, stay outside the grounds, and take photographs only from beyond the property.
Trains cannot currently reach Yatake Station, so you will need to drive.
