Sandstone Pillars at the Main Entrance
The Fujisaki Family Residence (Sekishokan) Front Gate, in Tanoura, Ashikita Town, Kumamoto Prefecture, is a stone gate built around 1894 and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 18 October 2000.
In Japanese it is 藤崎家住宅（赤松館）表門 (omotemon, the front gate). It opens in the front wall of the estate: a pair of stone pillars carrying double-leaf board doors across an opening 5.8 metres wide. In the side wall to the left, as you face the gate, a small wicket door lets one person through at a time. The doors and both side walls are part of the listing.
Plain, and All the Stronger for It
The Fujisaki Family Residence (Sekishokan) Front Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape, and the official description calls it simple yet imposing.
The pillars are long single shafts of sandstone, thought to have come from the Amakusa islands across the Yatsushiro Sea. Each is capped with a coping stone cut with a curved moulding, and that is very nearly the only decoration. With no roof and no carving, the gate relies on the sheer mass of the stone to mark a great landowner's threshold.
Look Up, Then Look Left
Start with the capstones. The moulded edge gives the tall vertical shafts a firm stop, and the weathered, darkened surface of the sandstone records well over a century of sea air and rain.
Then find the wicket door in the left side wall. It saved the household from swinging open the heavy main leaves for every errand, dividing ceremony and daily traffic within one gate. On either side, plaster over a clapboard skirt runs for about 30 metres, so that wall and gate read as a single facade.
Seeing the Front Gate
The Fujisaki Family Residence (Sekishokan) Front Gate faces the lane in front of the estate and can be seen from outside the property. On public days it was the way in.
The Ashikita Town Tourism Association reported that the estate was badly damaged in the earthquake of July 2026, and no reopening had been announced as of September 2026. The grounds cannot be entered. View and photograph the gate only from the lane outside.
