The Everyday Door to the Kitchen
The Fujisaki Family Residence (Sekishokan) Central Gate, in Tanoura, Ashikita Town, Kumamoto Prefecture, is a small tiled timber gate built around 1894 and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 18 October 2000.
In Japanese it is 藤崎家住宅（赤松館）真中の門, read mannaka-no-mon. It stands against the east end of the row house, once the menservants' lodging, and it was the door the household and staff used every day. It leads straight to a side entrance opening onto the earthen-floored kitchen area of the main house, a very different errand from the ceremonial front gate. The opening is 1.9 metres wide, one bay in traditional measure, and 15 metres of fence running east are included in the listing.
Small, but Carefully Made
The Fujisaki Family Residence (Sekishokan) Central Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape.
The official description stresses that a modest, plain gate was nonetheless built with care. It has two sets of doors: sliding lattice screens that let air and light through, and a heavy solid door with a wicket cut into it. On the pantiled roof, the joints between tiles are pointed with lime plaster. Lattice by day, the solid door by night, is the likely way the pair were used.
Three Ways Through One Opening
Stand in front of the Fujisaki Family Residence (Sekishokan) Central Gate and count the options: lattice screens, the solid door, and the wicket within it, all serving a single narrow opening.
Then look up. White lines of plaster trace the overlaps of the tiles, a finish that keeps out rain and sharpens the outline of a small roof. Seen together with the row house and the miso storehouse to the west, the gate clearly belongs to a front that was designed to match.
Seeing the Central Gate
With the row house and the miso storehouse, the Fujisaki Family Residence (Sekishokan) Central Gate forms part of the estate's street front and can be seen from outside.
The Ashikita Town Tourism Association reported that the estate was badly damaged in the earthquake of July 2026, and no reopening had been announced as of September 2026. The grounds cannot be entered. Keep to the outside of the gate.
