A Village Puppet Stage in Yamato
The Okawa Aso Shrine Rural Stage (大川阿蘇神社農村舞台) is a single-storey timber stage of 1953 in the grounds of Okawa Aso Shrine at Ohira, Yamato Town, Kamimashiki District, Kumamoto Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on November 10, 2005. It has a chanter's platform for puppet theatre (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as single-storey timber with a sheet-iron roof and a building area of 89 square metres; registration number 43-0076, owned by the religious corporation Okawa Aso Shrine.
Seiwa Bunraku and Village Stages
According to the Seiwa Bunraku Theatre, the puppet theatre of Yamato (formerly Seiwa village) began in the Kaei era around 1850, when villagers fond of joruri bought puppets from a visiting troupe from Awaji and learned the art.
The troupe was made up of farmers who performed offerings on the village stages of local shrines, praying for the harvest in spring and giving thanks in autumn. Seiwa Bunraku is now an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Kumamoto Prefecture and the only puppet theatre surviving in the prefecture (Seiwa Bunraku Theatre).
