What Is the Omori Family Residence Kannon Hall?
The Omori Family Residence Kannon Hall (大森家住宅観音堂, Ōmori-ke Jūtaku Kannondō) is a small Buddhist chapel in the southwest part of the Omori merchant compound in Yamaga, Yamaga City, Kumamoto Prefecture, built in 1957 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 27 March 2018. It is a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 9.3 square meters.
Of the five registered structures at the Omori Family Residence, the Kannon Hall is the youngest. It was added 85 years after the main house of 1872, in the years after the Second World War, as a shrine for the household's image of Kannon, the bodhisattva of compassion.
Temple Carpentry in 3 Meters Square
Yamaga City gives the Omori Family Residence Kannon Hall as 3 meters square. Its roof is Hōgyō-zukuri, four slopes meeting at a single point, and it is laid in Hongawarabuki, the heavy round-and-flat tiling of temples. The Agency for Cultural Affairs photograph shows a jewel-shaped finial at the apex.
On the front and both sides runs a Kirime-en veranda, its boards laid at right angles to the building, fenced by a Kōran railing. The front is a single bay hung with folding Sankarado panel doors. The other three sides are divided into two bays each, and the side walls carry half-height shitomi shutters that open at the top.
The eaves rest on Kumimono bracket sets of the Degumi type, projecting one step out from the wall. Between the brackets, only the front carries a decorative Kaerumata, the frog-leg strut. For a hall this small, it is built by the same rules as a temple's main hall.
Inside the Hall and Why It Was Registered
Inside the Omori Family Residence Kannon Hall, a Buddhist altar is built against the back wall, with the Kannon image enshrined at its center. Open the front doors and you face the image directly.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a Kannon hall of restrained design. It is registration number 43-171, listed for its contribution to the historic landscape. All five Omori structures were registered on the same criterion, so this small postwar hall is treated like the Meiji house itself, as part of the scenery of the compound.
The sources differ on its construction. The Agency for Cultural Affairs database calls it a timber building, while Yamaga City's list calls it earthen-walled. This article follows the national database.
Visiting
The Omori Family Residence Kannon Hall is a private family chapel in the garden of a private home, and it is not open to the public. The grounds cannot be entered.
Because it stands behind the main house and the north wall, toward the southwest of the lot, the Omori Family Residence Kannon Hall cannot be seen from the old Kikuchi Ōkan road. The pyramid roof and the front kaerumata are visible in the photograph in the Agency for Cultural Affairs database.
