What Is the Omori Family Residence?

The Omori Family Residence (大森家住宅, Ōmori-ke Jūtaku) is a merchant family's compound at the heart of the hot-spring town of Yamaga in Yamaga City, Kumamoto Prefecture, where a main house built in 1872 and four later structures, a storehouse, a Kannon hall, a north wall and a west wall, became Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on 27 March 2018.

The Omori compound lies on the south side of the old Kikuchi Ōkan road. Its main house faces north onto the street, and the north wall carries the frontage on westward from the house. The Agency for Cultural Affairs database leaves the owner field blank, while Yamaga City lists all five structures as privately owned.

A Merchant House at the Old Crossroads

A guide to local cultural properties published by the Yamaga City Board of Education in 2024 describes the Omori as a long line of merchants who rented out houses, lent money and brewed sake. The city's list of cultural properties calls the Omori Family Residence the home of one of Yamaga's wealthiest merchant families, active in finance from the end of the Edo period into the Showa era.

The location mattered. The Buzen Kaidō ran north from Kumamoto toward Buzen Province, and at Yamaga the Kikuchi Ōkan branched off it to the east, toward Kikuchi. A public notice board once stood at that junction. The Omori Family Residence sits close to the site of that notice board, on ground long regarded as the center of Yamaga's spa quarter, about 100 meters southeast of Sakura-yu, the town's original public bathhouse.

Five Registered Structures

All five structures of the Omori Family Residence were entered on the register together on 27 March 2018, in the 89th round of registration, as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties. They carry the consecutive numbers 43-169 to 43-173, and each qualified for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs database gives the following dates and sizes.

• Main house (43-169): 1872, with additions around 1924 and around 1945; 2-storey timber building, tiled roof, building area 381 square meters
• Storehouse (43-170): early Meiji period, extended in the late Meiji period; 2-storey earthen-walled storehouse, tiled roof, building area 118 square meters
• Kannon hall (43-171): 1957; single-storey timber building, tiled roof, building area 9.3 square meters
• North wall (43-172): around 1940; timber, tiled roof, 20 meters long
• West wall (43-173): around 1940; timber, tiled roof, 10 meters long, with a service gate

The oldest and youngest buildings are 85 years apart. A Meiji merchant house and its storehouse gained walls before the Second World War and a small family chapel after it, and the register took in the compound as those generations left it.

How the Compound Is Laid Out

The main house of the Omori Family Residence occupies the north side of the lot, facing the old Kikuchi Ōkan. The north wall runs 20 meters west from the end of the house along the same street and closes off the rest of the north side. The west wall encloses the west side and turns a right angle at its south end, where it opens in a small service gate.

Behind them is a garden, with the Kannon hall toward the southwest and the storehouse in the southeast corner. The house and the north wall present the public face; the Kannon hall and storehouse stay out of sight. The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits the north wall with shaping the streetscape together with the house, and the west wall with adding character to the view from the garden.

Visiting and Getting There

The Omori Family Residence is still a private home and is normally closed to visitors. The grounds cannot be entered, and we found no regular public opening of the five structures in the city's visitor information. The compound does sometimes host events: according to the Kumamoto Nichinichi Shimbun, a Yamaga-born sculptor held an exhibition of wood carvings there on 6 and 7 July 2024.

On an ordinary day, what you can see is the street front of the main house and the north wall along the old Kikuchi Ōkan. The road is a working neighborhood street, so please stay off the property and avoid photographing through the gate or windows.

By public transport, the starting point is Yamaga Bus Center, run by Kyushu Sanko Bus. According to Yamaga City's tourism office, the local bus from Kumamoto Sakuramachi Bus Terminal takes about 70 minutes, and the bus from Shin-Tamana Station on the Kyushu Shinkansen about 50 minutes. The Omori Family Residence is roughly 600 meters from the bus center as the crow flies, about a 10-minute walk. Drivers can use the free visitor car park in the town center known as the Buzen Kaidō parking lot.
