A Sake-Brewing Family's Compound in the River Port of Kawashiri

Yoshimura Family Residence (吉村家住宅, Yoshimura-ke Jūtaku) is the home compound of the Yoshimura sake-brewing family in Kawashiri 4-chome, Minami-ku, Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, where six structures dating from an 1869 tool storehouse to an early Showa wall were listed as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan on August 6, 2025. The six are the main house, the zashiki-gura storehouse, the tool storehouse, the west gate and south wall, the east gate and east wall, and the west wall.

The Yoshimura are the founding family of Zuiyo, a Kumamoto brewer. According to the company's history, the first head, Yoshimura Tahachi, began making clear sake in Kawashiri in 1867. At the time, the Higo domain drank mostly akazake, a sweet, ash-treated red sake, and Zuiyo was among the first local houses to switch. The company calls part of the Yoshimura Family Residence "the Yoshimura main house and tool storehouse" and describes it as the place where its brewing began, using water from the well next door.

Kawashiri lies about 8 kilometers south of central Kumamoto, a river port that grew on boat traffic along the Midori and Kase rivers. In the Edo period, rice paid as tax to the Kumamoto domain was gathered here and shipped on to Osaka. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the main house as a refined residence of a merchant family that prospered in modern Kawashiri.

Six Listings on One Day

The six Yoshimura Family Residence listings carry consecutive registration numbers, 43-0208 to 43-0213, in the 110th round of registrations. The Council for Cultural Affairs recommended them on March 21, 2025, and they were gazetted and registered on August 6, 2025. All six were registered for contributing to the historic landscape of the nation.

More than sixty years separate the oldest and newest. The tool storehouse dates from 1869. The main house and both gate-and-wall pairs belong to the mid-Meiji years, which the database gives as 1883 to 1897, and the zashiki-gura followed in 1908. The west wall, built in reinforced concrete, is from the early Showa period, 1926 to 1945. The main house also records an alteration around 1962.

The Agency classes the main house and the two earthen storehouses as buildings and the three gate and wall listings as other structures. Each is counted as a single unit.

A note on names and dates. Kumamoto City's Kawashiri 360 site presents the compound as the "Yoshimura Residence," dates it to the late Edo period, and calls it the family head's house surviving from Zuiyo's founding years. The Agency's database dates the main house to the mid-Meiji years, and this site follows the Agency.

How the Compound Is Laid Out

Pieced together from the Agency's descriptions, the Yoshimura Family Residence fronts a street on its south side.

Along that south edge, the east gate stands at the east end and the west gate toward the west, with the south wall running either side of the west gate to close off the western half of the frontage. Both gates are set back slightly from the street. From the east gate, the east wall runs 13 meters north along the eastern edge of the lot.

The main house stands well back from the gates, a long block running east to west. Its eastern rooms were for family life and its western rooms for receiving guests, with a suite of formal rooms at the northwest. The zashiki-gura occupies the northwest corner of the lot and is linked to the house by a covered corridor across the garden. The tool storehouse stands to the northeast. The west wall runs north to south between the main house and the zashiki-gura, marking the western boundary.

From the street, then, a visitor mostly sees gates and walls, with the main house roof rising behind them.

Visiting and Getting There

The Yoshimura Family Residence is a private home still in use and is not open to the public. Both Kumamoto Prefecture's cultural properties notice and the city's Kawashiri 360 site say the interior cannot be visited. Viewing is limited to the gates and walls from the street, without entering the grounds. Please photograph only from the public road and without disturbing residents or traffic.

The residence sits right beside Zuiyo's head office at 4-6-67 Kawashiri. Zuiyo's own directions give a walk of about 15 minutes from Kawashiri Station on the JR Kagoshima Main Line, or about 2 minutes from the Kawashiri-machi stop on Sanko Bus services bound for Kawashiri (such as those for Kunimachi).
