The Founding Image of Ninnaji
The Amida Triad (former principal image of the Kondo) (木造阿弥陀如来及両脇侍像(金堂安置)) is a Heian-period Amida triad of three figures owned by Ninnaji in Omuro Ouchi, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City, which in 1954 was designated a National Treasure.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records three figures owned by Ninnaji, first designated under the old system in 1911.
According to Ninnaji, it was the principal image of the Kondo when the temple was founded in 888.
The Statues
According to Ninnaji, the seated Amida is carved from a single block, and its gentle atmosphere is said to mark the starting point of Heian sculpture's gradual turn towards Japanese style.
Ninnaji notes that it is also known as the oldest surviving Amida with hands joined in meditation before the abdomen; the attendants are standing figures of Seishi and Kannon.
What to Look For
Ninnaji notes that at its founding the Amida triad in the Kondo was surrounded by figures of Bonten and the Four Heavenly Kings.
Notice the gentle expression of the single-block Amida and the meditation gesture before the abdomen.
