Heian Jogakuin Arisukan Nagayamon Gate

A gatehouse on Shimodachiuri-dori

The Heian Jogakuin Arisukan Nagayamon Gate (平安女学院有栖館長屋門) is a late Meiji timber Nagayamon of 1898 to 1912 on Shimodachiuri-dori in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto; it was repaired in 2008 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on February 23, 2012.

It forms the southern edge of the Arisukan compound, the side entrance to the Seitenmon's front gate on Karasuma-dori. It is a single-storey wooden building with a gabled pantile roof and a footprint of 77 square metres.

A nagayamon is a gate built into a long, low range of rooms, so that the gateway and the gatekeeper's lodging or storerooms share one roof. The type is familiar from samurai residences and the houses of wealthy farmers.

Why it was registered

The Heian Jogakuin Arisukan Nagayamon Gate was registered under the criterion of structures that contribute to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out the striking street scene it creates together with the brick church on the south side of the road.

That church is St. Agnes' Church, directly across Shimodachiuri-dori. Completed in 1898 in red brick, it is designated by the city of Kyoto. White plaster gatehouse on one side, brick nave on the other: the pairing of Japanese and Western, gate and church, defines this short stretch of street.

Heian Jogakuin, which owned the gate until 2024, described it as a nagayamon of the highest grade.

What to look for

The gateway opens slightly west of centre. To its east is a single room; to its west, two storerooms. From the street you can read the difference: the living room on one side, storage on the other.

The street front is finished in white Shikkui plaster with a projecting lattice window, or Degōshi, above a base of dark clapboard. The white upper wall, the dark boarding and the shadow of the lattice give the long facade its rhythm.

When Arisukan was open to visitors, this was the way in, with a reception desk set up in front; at the 2023 Kyoto Modern Architecture Festival, the main reception for the area was also placed in front of the Nagayamon.

Visiting

The Heian Jogakuin Arisukan Nagayamon Gate faces a public street, so its exterior can be seen at any time. The doors are normally closed, and as of September 2026 Arisukan is not open to the public.

From the pavement on the south side of Shimodachiuri-dori you can take in the full length of the gatehouse. St. Agnes' Church is right behind you, so turning around brings both buildings into view. The street is narrow and carries traffic, so choose your spot with care if you stop for photographs.
