Heian Jogakuin Arisukan Seitenmon Gate

A Mitsui family gate that found a new home

The Heian Jogakuin Arisukan Seitenmon Gate (平安女学院有栖館青天門) is a wooden gate of 1912 on Karasuma-dori in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto, moved in 1923 and again in 1952 before becoming the front gate of Arisukan, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on February 23, 2012.

It stands on the east side of the Arisukan compound, facing the Kyoto Imperial Park across the street. The gate is a hira-karamon, a gate whose roof curves up into a bow-shaped gable at each side; the Agency for Cultural Affairs classifies it as a kabutomon, or "helmet gate." It is 3.6 metres wide, roofed in copper sheet and flanked by wing walls.

According to accounts of Arisukan, the gate was built in 1912 for the residence of Mitsui Takayasu, head of the Mitsui family, and was moved here in 1952 to serve the official residence of the chief judge of the Kyoto District Court. The name Seitenmon, "Blue Sky Gate," is said to have been chosen by the poet Yoshii Isamu, a friend of the judge, who took the characters from a poem by Li Bai.

Why it was registered

The gate was registered under the criterion of structures that contribute to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a finely designed gate from a Taisho-period mansion.

Karasuma-dori runs along the western side of the Imperial Park. With the park's trees on one side of the road, the curved copper roof and white walls of the Seitenmon give the opposite side a formal frontage, and that contribution to the streetscape is the core of its value.

The Heian Jogakuin Arisukan Seitenmon Gate has passed from a merchant dynasty's mansion to a judge's residence and then to a school's cultural centre, and has been moved twice along the way, but it has always done the same job: marking the front door.

What to look for

Look up at the eaves first. The rafters are curved (wadaruki) and set in closely spaced pairs (fukiyose), so the soft bow of the roof edge is broken into a fine, regular rhythm.

The doors are each made from a single plank, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs notes the generous use of high-grade keyaki, Japanese zelkova. The grain reads best when the gate is closed and you stand square to it.

The wing walls carry a pantile roof, with walls finished in white Shikkui plaster above a base of clapboard. The shift from copper to tile and from plaster to timber reads best from a few steps back, ideally from the park-side pavement across Karasuma-dori.

Visiting

Because it faces a public road, the Heian Jogakuin Arisukan Seitenmon Gate can be seen from Karasuma-dori at any time. The doors are normally closed and you cannot go through. As of September 2026 Arisukan is not open to the public.

The gate is a short distance north of the Karasuma-Shimodachiuri intersection. If you stop on the pavement to take pictures, keep clear of passers-by.
