About the Ashida Family Residence Miso Storehouse
The Ashida Family Residence Miso Storehouse (蘆田家住宅味噌蔵, Ashida-ke Jūtaku Misogura) is a small single-storey wooden storehouse of the early Showa period in Higashiashida, Aogakicho, Tanba City, Hyogo Prefecture, registered as a national Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2006. As its name says, it was built to keep miso, the fermented soybean paste at the heart of Japanese home cooking.
It stands behind the main house on the east side. It measures 2.6 m by 3 m, with a building area of 7.8 m², and has a gabled roof covered in cement tiles.
Why the Ashida Family Residence Miso Storehouse was registered
The Ashida Family Residence Miso Storehouse was registered, under number 28-0244, as a structure that contributes to the historic landscape of the nation.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs values it for conveying the look of the household's everyday working spaces. A store for miso kept just behind the farmhouse is an ordinary scene of rural life, and here it survives as a building.
What to look for at the Ashida Family Residence Miso Storehouse
Inside, the Ashida Family Residence Miso Storehouse is a single room, and its doorway opens toward the main house, placed so that someone stepping out of the back of the house could reach it at once.
Under the eaves on the gable end, three round vents sit in a row. These small circular openings let air move through the store, and they give the plain gable wall its character.
The roof is covered not in fired clay tiles but in cement tiles. That change of material from the Edo-period house and shed is a quick way to see that the Ashida Family Residence Miso Storehouse belongs to the Showa period.
Visiting the Ashida Family Residence Miso Storehouse
The Ashida Family Residence Miso Storehouse is not open to the public, and no viewing arrangements have been announced. The area behind the main house is the private back of the home, so do not enter without permission.
The row of round vents on the gable end can be seen in the photographs in the Agency for Cultural Affairs database. Directions to the estate are on the Ashida Family Residence page.
