The Former Onogi Family Residence East Storehouse (旧大野木家住宅東蔵, Kyū Ōnogi-ke Jūtaku Higashigura) is a 2-storey earthen-walled storehouse of 1939 standing northwest of the formal rooms of the main house on the Onogi estate in Takehana Donomae-cho, Yamashina Ward, Kyoto City, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on July 25, 2011. Its lot number is 5-1.

The storehouse has an east-west ridge and a gabled Kirizuma-zukuri roof of Sangawara-buki pantiles. It is square in plan, 4.0 meters on each side, with a building area of 21 square meters, and it is built in the fireproof Dozo-zukuri manner. Of the 4 storehouses on the estate, it is the closest to the main house.

Why It Was Registered: A White Block at the Garden's Edge

The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that the Former Onogi Family Residence East Storehouse sits at a corner of the garden and gives the scene a settled quality. North of the main house runs a garden with a stream flowing east to west, and the Onogi east storehouse stands at one corner of it as a white block 4 meters square.

Looking out from the formal rooms, this is the building that closes the view. Its tall 2-storey wall makes a pale surface behind the planting. The registration criterion is that the building contributes to the historic landscape of the country.

Highlights: The South Doorway

The entrance to the Former Onogi Family Residence East Storehouse is on the south side, under a small pantiled eave. The paired doors are finished in Kakegonuri: the edges of the doors and the frame are plastered in stepped layers so that they lock together when closed, leaving little room for fire or smoke to get in.

Above the doors is a window with its own little hood. The outer walls have Koshiita boarding on the lower part and lime plaster above. That two-part finish, brown boards below and white plaster above, is shared by the west, north and middle storehouses too, and the Onogi east storehouse shows the estate's basic storehouse type in its plainest form.

The west storehouse stands immediately to the west, with the small Goma hall squeezed between their walls. This building marks the eastern end of the row.

Visiting the Former Onogi Family Residence East Storehouse

The Former Onogi Family Residence East Storehouse stands inside the grounds, at the corner of the garden behind the main house, so it is hard to see from the surrounding streets. The wedding and restaurant business at the Former Onogi Family Residence ended at the end of September 2024, and the grounds are now closed.
