Himeji Castle East Small Keep: The Plain Keep on the North Side

Himeji Castle East Small Keep (姫路城東小天守, Himeji-jō Higashi-kotenshu) is a three-roofed small keep with three floors and a basement, standing north of the main keep of Himeji Castle in Honmachi, Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture; built around 1609 as part of the linked keep complex, it was designated a National Treasure on 9 June 1951, after a first listing on 19 January 1931.

Despite its name, Himeji City's description places it north of the main keep, which puts it at the northeast corner of the keep square. Its south side joins the I Corridor Turret, leading to the main keep, and its west side the Ro Corridor Turret, leading to the Inui Small Keep.

The Himeji Castle East Small Keep is a size smaller than the Inui Small Keep and has three floors above ground like the West Small Keep. It has a single basement level, where the West Small Keep has two.

Why the Himeji Castle East Small Keep Matters: Turret and Lookout as One Form

Like the West and Inui Small Keeps, the Himeji Castle East Small Keep is built as a two-roofed turret with a lookout story on top. Himeji City points out, though, that on the East Small Keep the turret and lookout are fully merged in the exterior, with no visible break between them.

The other difference is ornament. The West and Inui Small Keeps dress their main faces with kara gables and black-lacquered cusped Katōmado windows; the East Small Keep has neither. Its white Shikkui walls are broken only by plain windows, a bare small keep set directly beside the most heavily decorated building in the complex.

Walk the four corners of the keep base and the pattern is clear. The main keep faces south, the West Small Keep puts its ornament on the south face, the Inui Small Keep on the west, and the East Small Keep at the northeast corner has no decorated face at all. Nowhere in the complex is the contrast in design easier to see.

What to Look for at the Himeji Castle East Small Keep

On the castle's official route map, the East Small Keep follows the main keep, with the He Gate and the first To Gate after it. Once you leave the main keep and start down, the Himeji Castle East Small Keep is close overhead.

Try counting the roofs. Three of them overlap, yet from outside it is hard to tell where the turret ends and the lookout begins. Seen right after the gables and lacquered windows of the West and Inui Small Keeps, the restraint of the East Small Keep stands out.
