What the Notice Board Is
The Izumo Daijingu Shrine Notice Board (出雲大神宮制札, Izumo Daijingū Seisatsu) in Chitose-cho, Kameoka City, Kyoto Prefecture, is a roofed board for official notices built in 1873 and registered as a Tangible Cultural Property on February 4, 2021.
A seisatsu was the frame on which rules and prohibitions were posted, with a small roof to protect the boards. This one is timber with a copper roof and is 0.9 meters wide.
The Izumo Daijingu notice board stands just in front of the stone torii on its west side, where anyone coming up the approach meets it before passing under the gate.
Why It Was Registered
The Agency for Cultural Affairs values the Izumo Daijingu notice board as a record of the very first stage of the shrine's modern revival. It is registered as No. 26-0624 under the historic-landscape criterion.
It predates the worship hall by five years: before the Meiji-era halls went up, the entrance to the approach was marked with this board.
Carpentry on a Small Scale
The Izumo Daijingu notice board stands on a base of dressed granite blocks. Two square posts are tied by a beam (Nuki), and arms (Udeki) pushed through their tops carry the purlins.
The rafters are spaced apart and given a slight curve, and the plain gable (Kirizuma-zukuri) roof is clad in copper laid in steps, so even a tiny roof has the layered shadow of a tiled one.
At under a meter wide it is barely more than furniture, yet it is framed with the same vocabulary as the shrine's halls.
