The Kintetsu Yodogawa Bridge: A 165-Metre Steel Span Born of an Imperial Deadline

South of Kyoto, where the Uji River broadens before joining the Katsura and Kizu, a single steel truss leaps the water in one uninterrupted span. No pier rises from the river. The bridge — officially the Kintetsu Yodogawa Bridge — was completed in October 1928, and at 164.6 metres it remains the longest simple-truss railway bridge in Japan, a record it has held without challenge for nearly a century.

The bridge carries Kintetsu's Kyoto Line between Momoyama-goryomae and Mukaijima stations in the Fushimi ward of Kyoto. Express trains, local services, and the limited-express "Shimakaze" bound for the Ise-Shima coast all cross here. To anyone watching from the embankment, a six-car train sliding across a curved-chord lattice looks almost weightless. The engineering behind that impression is the substance of the story.

An Enthronement, an Army, and a Race Against the Calendar

The Showa emperor's enthronement ceremony was set for 10 November 1928 at the Kyoto Imperial Palace, with public visits to the Momoyama imperial mausoleum to follow. Nara Electric Railway, the predecessor of today's Kintetsu, had spent years planning a line linking Kyoto with Yamato-Saidaiji — the natural gateway for travellers heading to Kashihara Shrine and the Momoyama tomb. Opening the whole route in time for the ceremony promised a passenger windfall the young company could not afford to miss.

One obstacle stood in the way: the Uji River, and beside it, the drill ground of the Imperial Japanese Army's 16th Engineer Battalion. The battalion used the riverbank for pontoon-bridging and river-crossing exercises. Conventional piers driven into the riverbed would have ruined that training. Negotiations dragged. The army suggested the railway accept "at most one pier"; the railway, watching its enthronement deadline shrink, abandoned its original plate-girder design and committed to something far more ambitious — a single, pierless span.

The decision was made by Sekiba Shigeki, the leading bridge designer of the day, and he had less than ten months to deliver. Steel from Bethlehem Steel in the United States — selected because Japan could not roll plate of the required dimensions fast enough — arrived in January 1928. Fabrication ran at the Hyogo plant of Kawasaki Shipbuilding in Kobe (which split off mid-project to become Kawasaki Sharyo). Sekiba and his team took the unusual decision to skip the customary trial assembly at the factory and ship the worked components straight to the site, where Obayashi Gumi handled erection. A single mis-drilled rivet hole could have wrecked the schedule. None did. The bridge was completed on 16 October 1928, with the trusswork weighing roughly 1,810 tons.

The total cost came to 839,023 yen 95 sen — a precise figure that survives in the original engineers' report. The commander of the 16th Engineer Battalion, invited to the completion ceremony, is said to have remarked that had he understood the scale of what was being attempted, he would have approved a design with one or two piers without further argument.

Why the Bridge Matters

When the Agency for Cultural Affairs registered the Kintetsu Yodogawa Bridge as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 18 October 2000, it cited its contribution to the historical landscape of the country. The technical citation is more specific. This is a through-type, curved-chord Pratt subdivided truss — a configuration uncommon enough in Japan that bridge enthusiasts often borrow the American term "Pennsylvania truss" to describe it. The Japan Society of Civil Engineers has separately rated it an A-rank modern civil engineering heritage site, the highest tier the society awards.

The 164.6-metre span has never been surpassed by another simple-truss railway bridge in this country. The structure was designed from the outset to carry two six-car formations of sixty-ton-class trains passing simultaneously — a live load specification that has spared Kintetsu the need to replace it as rolling stock has grown heavier over the decades.

Sekiba's design solved a constraint born of military priorities by reaching for what was, in 1928, the absolute edge of Japanese structural capability. That such a bridge could be built in six and a half months, using a method (no trial assembly) that almost no other engineer would have risked, is the reason it appears in textbooks as well as on the cultural-property register.

How to See It

The bridge is visible from both banks of the Uji River, and there is no single "front" vantage point. A short walk south from Momoyama-goryomae station brings you to the north embankment; from the south side, the area around Mukaijima station and the Kyoto outer ring road offers wider views including the lattice silhouetted against open sky. Both work especially well in late afternoon, when low sun catches the rivet heads and turns the curved upper chord into a clean black arc.

Note that the bridge is in active service. Walking onto the structure is not permitted, and access tracks belong to the railway. The reward is in the viewing, not the crossing. If you simply want to ride across it, board any Kyoto Line train at Momoyama-goryomae and travel one stop south to Mukaijima. The crossing takes under a minute and the rhythm of the steel is felt rather than seen.

Trains run frequently throughout the day, and the bridge itself is photogenic in every season — cherry blossoms along the embankment in early April, summer green, autumn colour on the surrounding levees, and clear winter light that flatters the steelwork.

What Else to Do in Fushimi

The bridge sits at the edge of one of Kyoto's most distinctive districts. Fushimi is the historic centre of Japanese sake brewing, and Momoyama-goryomae station is a ten-minute walk from the Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum, where weathered white walls and tile roofs of working sake warehouses line the Hori River. A short stroll west takes in Teradaya, the inn where the young rebel Sakamoto Ryoma narrowly escaped assassination in 1866, and the Jukkoku-bune passenger boats that drift between the breweries from spring to autumn.

Gokonomiya Shrine, just north of Momoyama-goryomae, is famous for its sweet spring water — one of Japan's hundred best waters — and for its role as the Satsuma encampment during the Boshin War. East of the station, the Momoyama imperial mausoleum complex, where Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken are interred, occupies a quiet hillside of cedar and gravel paths.

Travellers with more time can continue south on the same Kintetsu line to Uji, home to the eleventh-century Phoenix Hall of Byodo-in and the historic centre of Japanese green tea cultivation.
