The Older of the Two Storehouses

The Senzai Family Residence Old Storehouse (千歳家住宅旧蔵) is a storehouse for household goods of the early Meiji period (1868 to 1882) in Awabashicho, Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on June 28, 2017 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The family name 千歳 is read Senzai here, not Chitose.

The Agency records a two-storey earthen-walled storehouse roofed in tile, with a building area of 24 square metres; registration number 26-0524.

A Storehouse North of the Annex

The Senzai Family Residence Old Storehouse stands behind the main house and north of the annex, its ridge running north to south (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is a two-storey Dozo-zukuri storehouse, 5 metres by 4.9 metres, with a gabled pantile roof.

The walls are plastered, with vertical boards set high around the base (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The door is on the east side, under a small roof carried on moulded brackets (Mochiokuri).

Why It Was Registered

The Agency describes the Senzai Family Residence Old Storehouse as a household storehouse that forms part of the layout of an old family estate, and registered it as contributing to the historic landscape.

Built in the early Meiji period, the Senzai Family Residence Old Storehouse belongs, with the main house of 1869, to the oldest phase of the estate.

What to Look For

Start with the base of the Senzai Family Residence Old Storehouse: it sits on a stone foundation built against flooding, which lifts the floor clear of the ground (Agency for Cultural Affairs). On a site this close to the water, it kept the family's goods dry.

At the east door, notice the mouldings on the brackets under the small roof, and the line where the white plaster meets the board cladding below.
