A Storehouse of 1927

The Senzai Family Residence New Storehouse (千歳家住宅新蔵) is an earthen-walled storehouse of 1927 in Awabashicho, Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on June 28, 2017 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The family name 千歳 is read Senzai here, not Chitose.

The Agency records a two-storey earthen-walled storehouse roofed in tile, with a building area of 20 square metres; registration number 26-0525.

East-West Behind the Old Storehouse

The Senzai Family Residence New Storehouse stands behind the main house, north of the old storehouse, with its ridge running east to west (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is a two-storey Dozo-zukuri storehouse, 4.9 metres by 4.1 metres, under a gabled pantile roof.

The door faces south; windows open on the east side of the ground floor and on the east and south sides of the upper floor (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered the Senzai Family Residence New Storehouse as contributing to the historic landscape.

Built in 1927, the Senzai Family Residence New Storehouse stands with the early Meiji old storehouse at the back of the estate.

What to Look For

The walls of the Senzai Family Residence New Storehouse are not plastered but finished in artificial-stone Araidashi (Agency for Cultural Affairs), a finish in which mortar mixed with crushed stone is washed while still soft to expose the stone grains.

Like the old storehouse, it sits on a stone foundation built against floods (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Seen together, the two show the same base carrying a Meiji plaster wall in one case and an early Showa artificial-stone wall in the other.
