About the Kodaiji Karakasa-tei (Ankankutsu) and Shigure-tei

The Kodaiji Karakasa-tei (Ankankutsu) and Shigure-tei (高台寺傘亭(安閑窟)及び時雨亭) are two tea houses at Kodaiji in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, designated an Important Cultural Property on April 20, 1936. The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates the Karakasa-tei to the Momoyama period and the Shigure-tei to the early Edo period.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as the Karakasa-tei two bays by three with a one-bay lean-to, single-storey under a pyramidal thatched roof; the Shigure-tei four bays by two, two storeys under a hip-and-gable thatched roof. It is owned by Kodaiji, the temple founded in 1606 by Kita no Mandokoro (Nene) for Toyotomi Hideyoshi, which has five buildings designated Important Cultural Properties (Kodaiji, Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Why It Was Designated

The Kodaiji Karakasa-tei and Shigure-tei were designated an Important Cultural Property in 1936. They are thatched tea houses in the temple grounds, which Kodaiji lists alongside the Otamaya and Kaisando among its designated buildings.

What to Look For

The Karakasa-tei has a pyramidal (Hōgyō-zukuri) thatched roof and a lean-to; the Shigure-tei is a two-storey building under a hip-and-gable (Irimoya-zukuri) thatched roof (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The two thatched tea houses of different form stand together, contrasting the single-storey Karakasa-tei with the two-storey Shigure-tei (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
