The Gate on the North Side

The Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art North Gate (京都市美術館北門) is a museum gateway of about 1933 in Okazaki, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on August 17, 2020 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a reinforced-concrete gateway 18 metres wide; registration number 26-0601.

A Gate on the North Side

The Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art North Gate stands on the north side of the museum grounds: two gateposts set 18 metres apart (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The posts are reinforced concrete faced with granite.

Each post is octagonal in section, a square pillar with its corners boldly chamfered, and 2 metres tall (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The form is the same as the two main gates on the west front, so the north side of the site was given the same formal treatment as the main facade.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape, as one of the elements that shape the north frontage of the museum.

What to Look For

Look for the same octagonal posts as the main gates, here on the north side (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Walking round from the west front makes it clear how far the same design was carried around the site.

Visiting

The North Gate is an outdoor gateway on the north side of the site and can be seen from outside.
