A Timber Church of 1903

The Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Kyoto Orthodox Church, in central Kyoto, dates from 1903 and is the oldest surviving full-scale timber church of the Orthodox Church in Japan (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

It is plain, with little ornament, but its balanced exterior, crowned by a distinctive cupola and joined to a belfry, is beautiful, and the iconostasis imported from Russia is a splendid design (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The records show that Matsumuro Shigemitsu, an engineer of Kyoto Prefecture, made the working design from drawings supplied by the Orthodox Church (Agency for Cultural Affairs). A research bulletin of Kyoto City says the foundation was blessed in April 1901 and the church consecrated in April 1903.
