A Shrine Hall of 0.55 Square Metres
Muko Shrine Auxiliary Kasuga Shrine Main Hall (向日神社末社春日神社本殿) is a late Edo shrine building in Kitayama, Muko-cho, Muko City, Kyoto Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 4 August 2015. It is a single-storey timber hall roofed in Kokerabuki shingle, covering 0.55 square metres.
That figure is about a third of a single tatami mat. Muko Shrine Auxiliary Kasuga Shrine Main Hall is by a wide margin the smallest of the listed buildings at Muko Shrine. It is a one-bay Nagare-zukuri hall, facing south inside a protective shelter.
It sits north of the main hall and west of the Soreisha. Because it is enclosed, nothing of it can be seen from the approach.
Carried Here from Morimoto
The hall did not begin life in this precinct. It came from a shrine in a neighbouring village, absorbed into Muko Shrine during the Meiji period, and Muko City records the move from the village of Morimoto as taking place in 1878.
The early Meiji decades saw small village shrines across Japan folded into larger neighbours. Muko Shrine Auxiliary Kasuga Shrine Main Hall arrived in this precinct on that tide. A shelter was built to receive it, and it has stood inside that shelter since.
The hall itself was built in the late Edo period, somewhere between 1751 and 1830. Rather more than a century at Morimoto, rather more than a century here. The small building has now spent roughly equal time in two places.
The Smaller It Is, the Finer the Work
What makes Muko Shrine Auxiliary Kasuga Shrine Main Hall worth finding is that its size and its ornament run in opposite directions.
A curved Noki-karahafu canopy crowns the front, a device normally reserved for far larger halls, set here on a building one bay wide. The bracket arms of the Kumimono are cut with moulded profiles, and cloud patterns are carved into the gable ornament of that canopy. Neither the body of the hall nor its eaves was given lesser treatment.
A building of 0.55 square metres carrying the labour of a full-sized one. Set against what such carving would have cost a village congregation, the ornament is a measure of how much the people of Morimoto put into their shrine.
Seeing Muko Shrine Auxiliary Kasuga Shrine Main Hall
Muko Shrine Auxiliary Kasuga Shrine Main Hall stands within a shelter, so neither the interior nor the whole of the exterior is easy to take in. There is no access to the building and no regular opening is held.
The place to stand is on the south side, in front of the shelter opening. From there the south-facing front of the hall and the curve of its canopy are visible. Picking out the cloud carving takes a minute for the eyes to adjust to the dimness inside.
Light levels inside the shelter are low, and shooting without flash means long exposures. Brace yourself rather than leaning on the rail. Photography is normally permitted. Directions and opening conditions are covered on the Muko Shrine page.
