Rengeoin Temple at a Glance
Rengeoin Temple (蓮華王院), better known as Sanjusangendo, is a Buddhist hall of the Tendai temple Myohoin in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture; its main hall, rebuilt in 1266, is a National Treasure, and its South Gate of 1600 and Momoyama-period earthen wall, the Taiko Wall, are Important Cultural Properties. The name Sanjusangendo, "hall of thirty-three bays", comes from the 33 spaces between the columns of the inner hall, and the Kyoto City Tourism Association notes that the hall is now administered by Myohoin.
According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the main hall was first built in 1164 by order of the cloistered emperor Go-Shirakawa, later burned, and was rebuilt and dedicated in 1266. The Kyoto City Tourism Association and the Japan Tourism Agency both explain that the original hall stood within Go-Shirakawa's palace complex, Hojujidono, and was built with resources supplied by Taira no Kiyomori. The Tourism Agency adds that the temple and palace complex burned in 1249 but the hall was quickly rebuilt.
The Toyotomi Reshaping
At the end of the 16th century, Toyotomi Hideyoshi laid out a vast temple complex in Higashiyama centred on a huge new Great Buddha Hall (the Hokoji Daibutsuden) and absorbed Sanjusangendo into it. The Japan Tourism Agency's commentary notes that the South Gate and the earthen wall marking the southern boundary of the site date from this time, and that the gate and Hideyoshi's hall were aligned precisely on a north-south axis, an axis that today runs across the new entrance of the Kyoto National Museum opposite.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates the South Gate to 1600 and the earthen wall to the Momoyama period. The wall has long been called the Taiko Wall and associated with the Toyotomi family. The Great Buddha Hall is gone, but the gate and wall still trace the outline of a Momoyama precinct around the main hall.
Designated Structures
Three structures are designated. The main hall was first protected under earlier law in 1897 and became a National Treasure in 1952. The South Gate was designated in 1900 and the Taiko Wall in 1937.
Inside the main hall, the seated Thousand-Armed Kannon at the centre is flanked by 1,001 Kannon figures, along with the Wind and Thunder Gods and the Twenty-Eight Attendants, all of which the Kyoto City Tourism Association lists as National Treasures. These statues are designated separately as fine-art objects and are treated apart from the main hall's article.
