About the Seiler Family Residence Music Hall

The Seiler Family Residence Music Hall (ザイラー家住宅音楽堂) is a single-storey thatched timber building at Kamigoma in Hiyoshi-cho, Nantan City, Kyoto Prefecture, a temple hall of 1784 moved here in 1989, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on August 3, 2006. It is now used as the Kayabuki Ongakudo, the thatched music hall (Kyoto Prefecture).

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a single-storey timber building with a thatched roof and a building area of 192 square metres; registration number 26-0223, with no owner listed. The main house and music hall of the Seiler Family Residence were both registered on August 3, 2006 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

From Temple Hall to Music Hall

According to Kyoto Prefecture, the building was the main hall of Seigenji (now Zennoji) in Fukui Prefecture, built in 1784 and moved here in 1989. In 2006 the prefecture supported rethatching after typhoons and heavy snow had damaged the roof.

The Kayabuki Ongakudo website records that the pianist Kazuko Seiler built the thatched music hall Karyobinkutsu in the village of Goma in 1989.

Why It Was Registered

The Seiler Family Residence Music Hall was registered as a building that has become a model of design. The Agency for Cultural Affairs values it because, though moved, it keeps the size, form and column positions of the Tenmei-era temple hall and priests' quarters it came from.

What to Look For

The Seiler Family Residence Music Hall stands on higher ground south of the main house, facing north: a single-storey hip-and-gable (Irimoya-zukuri) thatched building with tiled pent roofs over the entrance and on the east side (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Because it keeps the temple hall's size and column positions (Agency for Cultural Affairs), the breadth of an Edo-period Buddhist hall survives under the thatch as a space for music.
