A Tall Thatched Hall

Ura Shrine, also called Urashima Shrine, keeps a Muromachi-period handscroll on the legend of Urashima, which ends with the founding of the shrine and its festival, itself designated by the state (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The main hall, of 1884, stands tall at the back of the precinct facing north, thatched and crowned with crossed finials and ridge logs (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Three bays by two with a veranda all round, it has folding panelled doors in the middle of the front.

The body is plain and straight-lined, with carving only on the well shelter attached at the north-east corner of the veranda (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The Agency calls it a fine example of the shinmei-type main halls found across the Tango region.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered it as a model of design.
