An Old Inn on the Ise Betsu Kaido

The Kadoya Ryokan Main Building (角屋旅館本館) is an inn on an old highway of the late Edo period (1830 to 1867) in Mukumoto, Geinocho, Tsu City, Mie Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on March 7, 2008 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a timber building, mostly two-storey with a single-storey part, roofed in tile, with a building area of 233 square metres; registration number 24-0068.

An Inn Facing the Old Highway

The Kadoya Ryokan Main Building faces south onto the old Ise Betsu Kaido highway (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is a two-storey building with a gabled pantiled roof, 7 and a half bays long and 5 and a half bays deep, with a corridor and annex projecting at the back on the west.

Along the front, from the west, are a raised room, the entrance earth floor, a through passage of earth floor and an 8-mat room, with 3 guest rooms in a row upstairs (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Why It Was Registered

The Agency notes that the lift-up shutters and projecting lattices preserve the street front of an inn on the old Ise Betsu Kaido, and registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape.
