About the Nagatani-en Villa

The Nagatani-en Villa (長谷園別荘, Nagatani-en Besso) is a 2-story timber house of the Taisho period (1912 to 1926) at the western edge of the Nagatani-en pottery grounds in Marubashira, Iga City, Mie Prefecture; built as retirement quarters, it became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 26 March 2015.

The main body of the Nagatani-en Villa is a 2-story hip-and-gable (Irimoya-zukuri) structure with a building area of 119 square meters. Iga City records that it was added in the Taisho period and is reached from the main house by way of the annex and a corridor. In front of it stands the west gate, registered as part of the Nagatani-en gates and walls.

Tatami rooms and a Western parlor

Each floor of the Nagatani-en Villa has two tatami rooms, which the Agency for Cultural Affairs describes as finished with refined joinery upstairs and down.

What sets the house apart is the Western-style room beside its hip-and-gable entrance. That room is edged with a parapet laid with Western roof tiles, and a bay window projects from its wall. A Japanese house with a single Western reception room by the front door is a form known to have spread through houses of the Taisho and early Showa years, and the Agency calls the villa a house that captures its period well.

That a retirement house was given a Western parlor suggests the head family of the pottery taking up the new domestic style of the Taisho years.

A contrast with the thatched main house

The Nagatani-en Villa was registered as a structure that contributes to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency notes that it makes a striking contrast with the thatched main house.

Toward the east of the grounds stands the Meiji main house, a traditional dwelling under a hipped thatched roof edged with tile. At the far west stands the Taisho villa, two stories under a hip-and-gable roof with a Western room attached. The Meiji annex and corridor link them, so that within one estate you can follow domestic life moving from a Meiji farmhouse type to a Taisho house with a Western parlor. The residential group that Mie Prefecture values at Nagatani-en gains much of its depth from this contrast.

Seeing the Nagatani-en Villa

The Nagatani-en Villa is in the private residential area and is not normally open. A travel operator has advertised special tours of the private house and garden in the past.

The elegant west gate stands in front of the villa, but we have not confirmed whether the Western room and bay window can be seen from outside it. Opening hours and directions for the walking area are on the Nagatani-en page.
