Where Tohoku's Engineers Learned Their Trade
Tohoku Imperial University established its Faculty of Engineering in 1919, and over the following decade a cluster of purpose-built classroom and laboratory buildings rose on Katahira Campus in Sendai. The largest survivor from that founding period is the former Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Classroom Building, completed in 1930. With a building area of 1,662 square meters, three stories above ground and a basement below, it dwarfs most of the other registered properties on campus. It received national registration as a Tangible Cultural Property in October 2021.
The building follows an L-shaped plan with a central corridor, and the stair hall at its core opens upward as an atrium, an airy gesture in a building otherwise devoted to workmanlike classrooms. Today it serves as South Building 1 of the Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials, so the rooms where students once studied machine design now support materials science.
A Symmetrical Face with Ornament at the Center
The design concentrates its effort where it counts. The long north facade is symmetrical, a compositional habit common in institutional architecture of the period but increasingly rare among surviving examples; the university's cultural property guide notes the building's value precisely as a remaining instance of that symmetrical elevation type.
The wall finishes divide horizontally: brick tile with sprayed coating on the lower level, a rougher lithin (sprayed mortar) finish above. At the center, the entrance breaks forward from the wall plane beneath an arch, the surrounding surface switches to stone cladding, and a small tower rises above the roofline. Everything decorative happens in this one bay. The registration citation describes the approach plainly: ornament gathered at the center, design effort concentrated there.
A 2007 renovation adapted the interior for research use while the facade kept its interwar character. The building was registered under the criterion of contributing to the historic scenery of the nation, together with its companion laboratory building next door.
Visiting the Engineering Quarter of Katahira
The building operates as working research space, so the interior is not open to the public. Katahira Campus itself is another matter: the university opens its grounds under a long-standing open-door policy, and the engineering quarter makes a rewarding detour from the better-known buildings near the main gate.
The former classroom building and the former laboratory building stand close together, and comparing the two is instructive. The classroom building carries the tower, the arch, and the stone; the laboratory building answers with a quieter two-tone facade and a stained-glass entrance. Paired registrations like this preserve not just single buildings but the working relationship between them, the classroom-and-laboratory rhythm of an engineering education a century ago.
