Stained Glass in an Engineering Laboratory
Stained glass is the last thing most people expect at the entrance of a 1920s engineering laboratory. Yet that is exactly what greets you at the former Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Laboratory Building of Tohoku Imperial University in Sendai: a stained-glass panel set above the central doorway, a small flourish of color in an otherwise disciplined two-story concrete building. Completed in 1929, the building was registered as a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property in October 2021.
The laboratory was built one year before its larger companion, the mechanical and electrical engineering classroom building, and the two were registered together. Side by side, they preserve the paired arrangement of teaching and experiment that shaped the early Faculty of Engineering, founded at the imperial university in 1919.
Two Colors, Two Window Shapes
The elevation is easy to read, and that legibility is part of its charm. The ground floor is faced in brick tile and lined with arched windows; the upper floor switches to a lithin sprayed-mortar finish and rectangular windows. One material and one window shape per story, with the color change drawing a clean horizontal line across the facade. The plan is a simple rectangle with a central corridor and rooms ranged along both sides. Entrance and staircase sit at the center of the composition, directly beneath the stained glass. Nothing here strains for effect; the building states its structure and purpose and stops.
A renovation in 2013 updated the interior, and the building now serves as the administrative office building of the Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials.
