A White Plastered Counting Room

The Former Hashihira Sake Brewery (Kamuro) Counting Room (旧橋平酒造店(醸室)帳場) is a plastered counting room in white with a black band under the eaves of the early Meiji period in Furukawa Nanokamachi, Osaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on February 26, 2021 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a two-storey plastered building with an iron-sheet roof and a building area of 46 square metres; registration number 04-197.

A Plastered Counting Room

The former Hashihira Sake Brewery, now known as Kamuro, was a merchant house that ran a brewery and other trades in central Furukawa, Osaki, with its shop, counting room and main house in a row along the old Oshu Kaido road (Agency for Cultural Affairs). All date from the early Meiji period; they were repaired in 2005 and moved in 2020. According to the Tohoku Tourism Promotion Organization, the brewery was founded in 1790.

The counting room of the former Hashihira brewery adjoins the north of the shop, a two-storey plastered building of the early Meiji period with a separate iron-sheet roof set over it, and the lean-to from the shop runs along its front (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The walls are white plaster with a black plaster band under the eaves.

The ground floor, once joined to the shop as an earth-floored and boarded counting room, was later made into a single earth-floored room. The Agency notes that with the shop it lends dignity to the old road.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape.
