Granite Pillars That Outlasted a War
A university gate is usually the least noticed building on campus; people pass through it, not to it. The main gate of Tohoku University in Sendai deserves a pause. Built in 1926 on the west side of Katahira Campus, it consists of a pair of reinforced concrete pillars clad in granite, each topped by a triangular capital shaped like the nib of a pen, with a smaller pillar of the same design standing at each flank. The opening between the main pillars spans 6.3 meters. In October 2021, the gate was registered as a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property.
The pen-nib capitals are more than a flourish. On the gate of an imperial university, the form reads as an emblem of scholarship itself, the writing instrument monumentalized in stone at the threshold where students entered academic life.
What the Gate Lost, and What It Kept
The gate that stands today is not quite complete. During World War II, Japan's metal requisition drives collected iron and bronze fittings across the country to feed munitions production, and the original gate doors went with them. The doors seen now, along with alterations made in the 1960s and 1970s, differ from the original design.
The pillars, though, are the pillars of 1926. Their granite cladding survived both the requisition and the air raids of July 1945 that destroyed most of central Sendai, and the university's cultural property guide values the gate precisely as a structure that carried the history of Tohoku Imperial University through the war and into the present. The registration criterion, contribution to the historic scenery of the nation, fits a monument whose chief work has always been to stand still while everything around it changed.
The south main pillar carries the nameplate of Tohoku University, so the gate continues to perform its original ceremonial duty a century on.
The Best Starting Point for a Katahira Walk
The gate makes a natural first stop on a walking tour of Katahira Campus, which Tohoku University keeps open to the public. A city bus from Sendai Station stops at Tohokudai-Seimon-mae, literally the stop in front of this gate, and the subway stations Aoba-dori Ichibancho and Itsutsubashi are each about ten minutes away on foot.
Pass between the pillars and the avenue ahead leads directly toward the former university library reading room of the same year, 1926, now the Tohoku University Archives, its copper-roofed tower visible down the axis. Gate and library were conceived as parts of one campus scene, and walking the line between them is the quickest way to feel what the imperial university wanted a visitor's arrival to be.
