Sumaru Yashiki: A Merchant House in Shiroishi's Old Castle Town
Sumaru Yashiki (壽丸屋敷) is a former merchant house in Naka-machi, Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture, at the centre of the old castle town; its late Meiji shop storehouse and its main house, said to date from 1921, were entered on the national register as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 2019.
The shop storehouse faces west onto the street, and the main house stands behind it facing south: a street-front shop in fireproof storehouse construction with the family residence behind, the classic layout of a castle-town merchant house. Both were registered on 10 September 2019 and belong to Shiroishi City.
The Buildings and Their Value
The Agency for Cultural Affairs praises the shop storehouse for a solid, well-balanced exterior that shapes the streetscape of the old castle town, and the main house for conveying the traditional layout of a Shiroishi merchant house.
According to Shiroishi City, family tradition dates the main house to 1921. It sets Japanese and Western design side by side without awkwardness, with glass skylights in Japanese rooms, imported timber and a brick foundation, reflecting an era when timber building flourished. The Meiji storehouse on the street and the Taisho house behind it make one estate from two periods.
Visiting
Sumaru Yashiki is in Naka-machi in central Shiroishi and belongs to the city. No official information on opening days, hours or fees could be found; contact Shiroishi City about access.
The shop storehouse fronts the street and can be seen from there. Be careful not to block traffic.
