Toshinji Temple

Toshinji Temple (當信寺), a Jodo-school temple south-east of the castle town in Motomachi, Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture, has a main hall of 1831 and a gate of 1887 that became Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on August 1, 2016 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Two Buildings

The main hall has the plan typical of Jodo-school halls, with a front veranda, an outer hall, an inner sanctuary and side rooms, and openwork carvings in the brackets of its porch (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The gate is said to have been built with timbers from a gate of the second bailey of Shiroishi Castle; on top sits a gabled bell chamber, probably once the gate's turret, with a large jewel-shaped opening, recalling the castle town's passage into the modern era (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Each building is described on its own page.

Visiting

Both are owned by Toshinji Temple (Agency for Cultural Affairs). No official visiting information was found.
