Furusawa Brewery Front Gate and Wall: Where the Grounds Meet the Town
Along the street south of the main house, a gate and a run of wall mark where the Furusawa property meets the town. Both went up around 1923 (Taishō 12). The gate stands back from the street and faces west; it is an udegimon, a bracket-arm gate, roofed in the gabled sangawara pantile style. The wall reaches some 18 meters, and with the gate it draws the line between the reception wing's front garden and the public road.
Why It Is Protected
The wall is built in the shinkabe manner, its posts left exposed, with plaster above and a skirt of vertical boarding below. A framed lattice window sits to the north of the gate and an irregular lattice window to the south, so the barrier never reads as blank. The Agency for Cultural Affairs registered the gate and wall together on November 2, 2018 as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property, recognizing how the pair shapes the historic street.

A gate and wall can seem minor beside the storehouses, yet they are what a passerby meets first. The bracket-arm gate, the plastered wall, and the two different lattice windows set the tone of the frontage and tie the brewery into the older grain of Ōdōtsu.
