Izakibana: A Deep-Sea Floor You Can Walk Across

Izakibana is a small cape on the Hyuga-nada coast of Nichinan, in the southern part of Miyazaki Prefecture, reaching into the sea just below the busy harbour of Aburatsu. It is not large. The headland runs roughly 800 metres from east to west and 400 metres north to south, and a circuit of its shoreline covers little more than a kilometre. What makes it worth a journey lies in the sea cliffs that ring it, walls of rock standing 10 to 20 metres above the waterline.

Those cliffs, together with the wave-cut platform at their feet, were designated a National Natural Monument on 18 March 2014. The protected ground measures 5,228 square metres. It records, layer by stacked layer, what happened on a deep ocean floor between roughly 40 and 22 million years ago.

For Miyazaki this was a notable designation. It was the prefecture's first new natural monument in nineteen years, and the rock it protects is read not for its scenery alone but for the geological evidence packed into it.

How a Deep Ocean Bed Reached Dry Land

The rock at Izakibana belongs to the Nichinan Group, a thick succession of sandstone and mudstone laid down in alternating bands. The setting of its formation was the deep sea, somewhere between an ocean trench and the slope of a continental margin. As an oceanic plate slid down beneath the edge of the continent, sediment that had collected on the seafloor was scraped off and welded onto the landward side, the process that builds what geologists call an accretionary prism. Much later, that scraped-together pile was lifted and exposed.

The history was not tidy. After the sediment hardened, crustal movement and enormous submarine landslides broke the Nichinan Group into huge detached blocks of rock. The strata visible at Izakibana are understood to be several of these displaced masses rather than one unbroken sequence.

Most of the sandstone beds began as turbidites. A turbidity current is a dense, fast slurry of sediment and water that rushes down a submarine slope, often set off by an earthquake. When such a flow loses speed on the deep floor it drops its load in a predictable order: coarse grains settle first, finer material above. That single rule, repeated through countless flows over millions of years, produced the banded cliffs a visitor sees today.

Why the Site Is Protected

The study of sedimentary structures is almost as old as geology itself, and sedimentary rock remains one of the essential records for reconstructing how a landmass came to be. Izakibana earns its designation because it gathers an unusual range of these structures in one accessible place, and because they are developed with textbook clarity.

The cliffs preserve features formed at three separate moments: while sediment was being carried and dropped by moving water; in the hours and days afterward, as waterlogged sediment compacted and squeezed out its trapped water; and later still, as the deposit turned to stone. Read together, they describe both the environment of the ancient seafloor and the mechanics of how it was buried.

One feature stands above the rest. The flute casts on the undersides of the sandstone beds here are considered the finest in Japan for their size, their state of preservation, and their sheer clarity. That single quality is the heart of the designation.

What to Look For on the Rock

Reading Izakibana rewards patience. The structures are not labelled, and the most striking ones sit on surfaces you have to look at sideways or from below.

Flute casts and groove casts. When a turbidity current scoured the soft mud of the seafloor, it gouged out swirling hollows and straight grooves. The sand that followed filled them, and the filling now projects from the base of the sandstone beds as raised ridges and teardrop shapes. Geologists group these as sole markings, and they also reveal which way the ancient current flowed.

The graded succession. A complete turbidite passes upward through an orderly set of layers, from a coarse graded base through parallel and rippled laminations. Spotting this repeated rhythm is the clearest way to recognise that each band was laid by a single sudden flow.

Load casts and ball-and-pillow. Where heavy sand settled onto softer mud, the boundary buckled and the sand sank into the mud below in bulging lobes. Pushed further, the sand can break into rounded masses, a structure named ball-and-pillow for its appearance.

Dish, pillar and convolute structures. As freshly buried sand expelled its pore water upward, the escaping water left shallow dish-shaped traces and vertical pillars. Where the sand briefly behaved like a liquid, its layering crumpled into the tight, irregular folds known as convolute structure.

Clastic dykes and slump folds. Sand injected upward or downward into neighbouring mud beds forms thin wall-like clastic dykes. Whole packets of strata, dragged by submarine landsliding, are folded and contorted into slump structures, and where the movement was violent the original layering broke into rubble.

Trace fossils. The rock also holds the burrows and trails of animals that lived on the deep-sea bed. Well preserved here, they confirm the deep-water setting that the physical structures imply.

Visiting Izakibana

The cape is managed as Izakibana Park, with a car park and a free, year-round campground near the headland. From the car park a path of about ten minutes winds through dense subtropical growth, phoenix palms among it, to a wooden observation deck near the tip. The view from the deck takes in the deep blue of the Hyuga-nada, the scattered reefs called Nanatsubae, and the island of Oshima offshore. It is regarded as one of the best outlooks on the whole Nichinan coast, and because the walk discourages casual visitors, it is often quiet. Local people gather here for the first sunrise of the new year.

The sedimentary structures themselves lie on the rocky shore below the observation deck, not on the walking path. Reaching them means descending onto an uneven wave-cut platform. The footing is poor, and there is a real risk of high waves and falling rock, so the shore should be approached with caution, in calm conditions, and not at all when the sea is rough. Visitors who only want the panorama can stay on the deck and miss none of the view.

Izakibana sits within easy reach of Nichinan's better-known destinations. The castle town of Obi, a short drive inland, keeps its samurai-era street plan, stone walls and the reconstructed gate of Obi Castle, and is a pleasant place to walk. South along the coast, the shrine of Udo Jingu occupies a cave in a sea cliff, an unusual setting that draws visitors year-round. The harbour district of Aburatsu, immediately north of the cape, has been revived in recent years with cafes and a relaxed seafront mood. Together they make Izakibana an easy half-day addition to a wider tour of the Nichinan coast.
