About Suzuki Ryokan

Suzuki Ryokan (鈴木旅館) is an inn in Aburatsu 1-chome, Nichinan City, Miyazaki Prefecture, in business since the Meiji era, whose mid-Meiji main building and the west main building, north annex, east annex and storehouse added in the early Showa period were registered as five Registered Tangible Cultural Property structures on March 27, 2006. The Agency for Cultural Affairs values it as a long-established Aburatsu inn dating from the Meiji era.

Nichinan City counts the Suzuki Ryokan among the cultural properties that tell the story of the port town of Aburatsu and the Horikawa Canal. The Agency describes the north annex as added when Aburatsu harbour was flourishing in the early Showa period, the additions together recording the inn's growth (Agency for Cultural Affairs, Nichinan City).

Five Buildings

The two-storey main building stands set back from the road to the south, two east-west hip-and-gable blocks joined by a north-south link, with a side entrance and bath at the front, a large hall behind and five guest rooms upstairs. To its west, facing the road, is the early Showa west main building with the main entrance, a kitchen and five more guest rooms upstairs (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

North of the west main building is the two-storey north annex; east of the main house is the single-storey east annex with a Japanese room, a Western room and a bath; and in the north-west corner of the plot stands a white-plastered storehouse (Agency for Cultural Affairs). All five were registered as contributing to the historic landscape of the country.

A Nichinan City planning document lists the Suzuki Ryokan as privately owned and not open to the public. Please view it only from the street. The address is 1-2-7 Aburatsu, Nichinan City (the east annex is at 1-2-6).
