A two-storey storehouse on the north edge of the estate
The Takahashi Family Residence West Storehouse (高橋家住宅西蔵, Takahashi-ke Jūtaku Nishigura) is a two-storey earthen storehouse of the mid-Meiji period, built between 1883 and 1896, at 5-4077 Obi, Nichinan City, Miyazaki Prefecture, and was listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (building) on 10 September 2010.
It stands toward the west end of the north edge of the plot, with the barn next door to the east. The ridge runs east to west under a Kirizuma-zukuri gable roof of Sangawara-buki pantiles. The building measures 8.4 metres by 4.4 metres and covers 37 square metres, the smaller of the estate's two storehouses.
Windows that lighten the Takahashi Family Residence West Storehouse
The Takahashi Family Residence West Storehouse was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out the windows on its south face.
The walls are finished in Shikkui lime plaster, and the south wall has two windows on each floor. The Agency notes that these four openings give a light, lively look to a front that would otherwise be mostly solid wall.
A long-side entrance and four courses of Obi stone
The doorway of the Takahashi Family Residence West Storehouse is on the south side, with a small roof above it. Because the ridge runs east to west, the entrance falls on the long side of the building. That sets it apart from the east storehouse, which is entered at the gable end, and lines it up with the barn along the north edge.
The base is built from four courses of Obi stone, one fewer than the east storehouse, but the same local stone found throughout the castle town.
With its white plaster, windows and doorway canopy, the south face gives the north side of the estate a tidy, finished front.
