A Gate Set Back from the Road

The Hatta Family Residence Front Gate (八田家住宅表門, Hatta-ke Jūtaku Omotemon) is the entrance gate of a merchant compound in Matsushiro, Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture; built around 1897, it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 26 December 2005. It stands just south of the Hatta Main House, pulled back slightly from the road.

It is an Udekimon, a gate whose roof overhang is carried on brackets projecting from the posts, with a gabled roof of Sangawara-buki pan tiles. The opening is 7.0 metres wide. Heavy posts carry a crossbeam with a board panel set above it; below, a lintel frames a pair of swinging doors.

On either side the gate is flanked by short Sodobei wing walls under their own gabled roofs, and from these a boarded fence topped with spikes runs on. The Agency for Cultural Affairs treats the wing walls and fence as part of the gate.

Why It Matters

The Front Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency describes it as a gate that conveys the street front of a wealthy merchant's house.

The bracketed gate is a modest type, much plainer than a temple's main gate or a daimyo mansion's, and it was widely used for townhouses and side entrances. The Hatta dressed it up: thick posts, a panel above the crossbeam, double doors, and wing walls that stretch the whole composition sideways. The family's standing shows in the width of the enclosure rather than in the gate alone.

The spikes along the top of the fence, called shinobi-gaeshi, were meant to stop anyone climbing over. For a household that kept its wealth in storehouses, that caution is put on display facing the street.

Nagano City's landscape listing calls this gate a Yakuimon, a type with rear support posts behind the main posts. That is a different frame from a bracketed gate. This article follows the Agency's registration record, which identifies it as an udekimon.

What to Look For

Notice the setback first. The Main House fills the edge of the road, but the Hatta Family Residence Front Gate steps back, leaving a small forecourt that separates the entrance from passing traffic. The shop front and the family entrance are kept apart.

Look up at the panel above the crossbeam and along the spikes on the wing walls. The heft of the posts is easier to judge from an angle than head on.

North of the gate runs the lattice of the Main House. Frame the gate at one edge and look north, and you can see how the whole street front, built together around 1897, reads as one piece.

Visiting

The area inside the Hatta Family Residence Front Gate is not open to the public (checked September 2026). The gate and its wing walls can be seen from the pavement along National Route 403.

The grounds are private, so do not pass through the gate, and take photographs from the pavement.
