Kojindo

A Hall in the Old Castle Town of Matsushiro

The Kojindo (荒神堂) is a hip-and-gable hall of the late Edo period in Matsushiromachi Matsushiro, Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on October 18, 2006 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a single-storey timber hall with a tiled roof and a building area of 133 square metres; registration number 20-0276.

A Hall That Faces Its Street

The Kojindo is a single-storey timber hall 7 bays wide and 3 and a half bays deep, with a tiled hip-and-gable roof entered at the gable end and a porch at the front (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Its bracket sets project one step and carry bearing blocks, frog-leg struts fill the spaces between the columns, and the eaves have two tiers of closely set rafters. A veranda with a railing runs round all four sides (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Why It Was Registered

The Agency notes an exterior that gives weight to the front, with a decorated gable and porch, and registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape.

What to Look For

The front bay is left open, with lattice doors behind it and board doors on the sides (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Note the decorated gable and the porch on the front.

It is owned by the local neighbourhood association (Agency for Cultural Affairs). No official visiting information was found.
