Komatsu Family Residence (Kataoka, Shiojiri)

One of the Oldest Farmhouses in Eastern Japan

The Komatsu Family Residence (Kataoka, Shiojiri) (小松家住宅（長野県塩尻市片丘）) is a farmhouse of the early 18th century in Kataoka, Shiojiri City, Nagano Prefecture, and was designated an Important Cultural Property on June 2, 1973 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records 15.8 by 9.7 metres, with a hipped thatched roof and board-roofed lean-tos on the east and west sides; designation number 01895.

A Farmhouse of Simple, Early Form

The Komatsu Family Residence in Kataoka, Shiojiri, is a farmhouse of the early 18th century owned by Shiojiri City (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It measures 15.8 by 9.7 metres under a hipped thatched roof, with board-roofed lean-tos on the east and west.

The Agency calls it one of the oldest houses in eastern Japan. It has been enlarged and altered several times, but it was first about 11 by 8 metres, which would still have been large for its day; its plan and structure are very simple and early.
