The Miyazawa Family Residence Gateposts, Stone Wall and Roofed Wall (宮澤家住宅門柱・石塀・屋根塀, Miyazawa-ke Jūtaku Monchū, Ishibei, Yanebei) are the front gateposts and the walls enclosing the east and south of an estate at 3042 Misato Akemori, Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture, built around 1920 and around 1936 and entered on Japan's register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 1998. The stone wall and the timber roofed wall together run 90 meters.
A single registration covers the gate and the walls. According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the stone gateposts and stone wall were remade when the main house was rebuilt in 1936. That explains the two dates; the roofed wall presumably keeps its Taishō-era form.
Granite Posts in Three Courses
The front gate of the Miyazawa estate has no doors and no roof, only two main posts. Each is built of three courses of large cut granite blocks and topped with a stone ball. The Agency calls the design stylish.
The main house of about the same year is a Japanese-style residence under a hip-and-gable roof, yet the front gate is stone rather than timber, and its ball finials are rarely seen on a traditional Japanese gate. Side by side, they show an old family bringing a newer taste to the face it showed the outside world in the early Shōwa years.
From Stone to Tiled Coping
From the gateposts, the stone wall of the Miyazawa Family Residence Gateposts, Stone Wall and Roofed Wall runs on and, along the south side, joins a roofed wall, a wall capped with its own small roof, which the Agency describes as a standard type.
The stone and roofed sections differ in material and date, yet they meet without a break and enclose the estate as one line. The Agency notes that together they give the house its formal setting. The registration criterion is contribution to the historic landscape, and these 90 meters of wall are, in effect, the outline of the Miyazawa estate as seen from outside.
