About the Miyazawa Family Residence Main House

The Miyazawa Family Residence Main House (宮澤家住宅主屋, Miyazawa-ke Jūtaku Shuoku) is a two-story timber house built in 1936 in Misato Akemori, Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture, and entered on Japan's register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in 1998. It has a tiled Irimoya-zukuri hip-and-gable roof and a building area of 270 square meters.

It is the largest of the seven registered structures on the estate and stands at its center. The Agency for Cultural Affairs, noting that one earlier head of the family was village mayor and the next ran a silk-reeling business, calls the house a typical Japanese-style residence of the prewar years.

Deep Eaves and a 32-Mat Hall Upstairs

From outside, what you notice first about the Miyazawa Main House is the depth of its eaves. The big hip-and-gable roof and the broad overhang beneath it make a two-story house read low and heavy, spread out rather than tall. The Agency singles out that weighty, deep-eaved exterior as a defining trait.

Inside, the details it points to are the carved Ranma transoms around the formal Zashiki rooms and a 32-mat hall on the upper floor. According to the Agency, that hall served to receive guests in both private and public capacities. A second large reception room upstairs, on top of the formal rooms below, suggests a household for which receiving visitors was part of the job.

The Agency's entry for the stone gateposts describes them as rebuilt when the main house was reconstructed. The Miyazawa Family Residence Main House, in other words, appears to have replaced an earlier dwelling on the site. The udegimon gate beside the entrance dates from about the same year, so the whole front of the house was put in order at once.

Why the Miyazawa Main House Was Registered

The Miyazawa Family Residence Main House was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency describes it as a typical Japanese-style house of the prewar years, pointing to its roof and eaves, and calls the carved transoms around the formal rooms well worth seeing.

The 1885 storehouse and the gate and barn of around 1920 still stand around it, and the main house holds the group together. Surrounded by older outbuildings, it also shows plainly that the 1936 house is the newest layer of the family's estate.

Seeing the Miyazawa Family Residence Main House

No official information about opening the interior of the Miyazawa Main House could be found as of September 2026, so the hall and the carved transoms cannot be seen. Any view of the exterior is from outside the property, and the gates and garden are off limits. No guidance on photography was found.
