A Tiny Shrine on a Great Boulder
Nakabusa Onsen Mountain God Shrine (中房温泉山の神の社, Nakabusa Onsen Yama no Kami no Yashiro) is a small Shinto shrine of the late Edo period at Nakabusa Onsen in Hodaka Ariake, Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 25 July 2011. It carries registration number 20-0375.
It stands west of the Tamura Yakushido, set on top of a huge boulder carved with an incised inscription or design. The shrine itself sits on a sill and is a single-bay building in the nagare-zukuri style, with a roof of kokerabuki wooden shingles. Its building area is recorded as 0.18 square metres, by far the smallest of the seven.
The mountain god is the deity to whom those who work the mountains pray for safety and a good yield. Hoyano Shigeo of Shinshu University notes that Nakabusa was bound up with hunters, woodcutters and others who made their living on the mountain long before the modern era, and he treats this shrine, with the Tamura Yakushido, as physical evidence of that culture of work and faith.
Full-Scale Craft in Miniature
Small does not mean simplified. The round columns of the core are tied with penetrating ties and nageshi rails; a frame on top of them carries three-bearing brackets. The gable has a koryo rainbow beam and a taiheizuka strut, and the rafters are closely set in two layers. The front canopy stands on square posts with carefully chamfered corners, again topped by mitsudo-gumi brackets.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs praises it as a small shrine building finished with great care. It was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape.
List the parts and you have the vocabulary of a full-size shrine sanctuary on the plains. Here it has been shrunk to a tiny scale without a single element left out, and that is where the value of the Nakabusa Onsen Mountain God Shrine lies.
What to Look For
Look at the rock first. The boulder under the shrine bears an incised carving, but the registration record does not say what it shows. Scan the face of the stone for the cut lines.
Then come closer and look under the eaves: the two layers of slender rafters, the beam and strut in the gable, the brackets on the columns. Only at close range can you see how every member has been scaled down rather than omitted.
Shingle roofs of thin overlapping wooden boards weather quickly, and the record does not say when the present roof was laid.
Seeing the Shrine
The Nakabusa Onsen Mountain God Shrine stands inside a working inn. Its exterior can be seen from within the grounds by overnight guests and by those booking one of the inn's day plans, which include a walk past the registered buildings.
